What makes a good travel agent?

Posted on December 28, 2014 at 4:24 pm

Modern travel agencies started to appear during Victorian times, notably during the second half of the nineteenth century. Thomas Cook is credited with being the first travel agent in the UK and, in association with Midland Railway, he opened a chain of travel agencies. His first ever organised group tour was the 12 mile rail journey from Loughborough to Leicester. Five hundred passengers paid one shilling (5p) for the inaugural trip.

However, what makes a good travel agent? What are the qualities required? Is it the kind of job that any school leaver can do?

First of all, you need to be interested in travel and have some knowledge of world geography. You need to like planning and organising. Most travel agencies do not specify any particular qualifications but it would be useful to have GCSEs, including maths and English. You will be dealing with the general public so it is vital that you have good “people skills” – a friendly disposition, good manners and good listening skills. For answering the telephone and making phone calls, you will need to be articulate and have clear diction when you speak. Employers will want to see enthusiasm in all you do and knowledge of a foreign language may also be highly beneficial.
